What makes for successful spiritual innovation?

The most successful spiritual innovations are bold acts of imagination. They offer fresh pathways to belonging, becoming, and connecting with something beyond ourselves. And it’s not just about what is offered, but how it’s offered: with relevance, credibility, and heart. The most impactful projects meet people where they are and walk alongside them with compassion and curiosity. They build trust, invite growth, and foster real transformation for individuals, communities, and the wider world. When people engage with a successful spiritual innovation, they feel seen, supported, and empowered to become their fullest selves and to contribute to the greater good.

And just as spiritual innovation must be soulful, it must also be strong. A thriving project is rooted in equity, designed to be accessible and liberatory, and led with integrity and care. Ideally, projects become financially viable, structurally sound, and ecologically mindful. Innovations reach people and resonate deeply, offering clear pathways into community and meaning. And just as importantly, spiritual innovations cultivate leadership that reflects strong values, ensuring that the work not only grows, but grows well. This website is filled with tools to help you navigate these questions and strengthen your vision and work.

As you build your project, you might consider the following seven elements, which Sacred Design Lab identified in the most promising spiritual innovations from their global research

Innovation

  • Novelty: Does my project provide a new concept, context, offering, or pathway for engaging spirituality?
  • Rootedness: Does my project grow out of or learn from existing spiritual or religious systems or traditions?

Spirituality

  • Belonging: Do participants experience caring for one another and contributing to something that matters to them?
  • Becoming: Do participants move toward meaning, purpose, and wholeness?
  • Beyond: Do participants connect to a sense of ultimacy, transcendence, or the sacred?

Effectiveness

  • Content: Does my project address spiritual longings in a way that is relevant, credible, compelling, and coherent?
  • Engagement: Do I understand the needs of my participants and work with them in meaningful ways?
  • Impact: Does my project lead people to flourish in their own lives and contribute to the greater good?

Accessibility

  • Justice: Is my project designed to meet unmet needs and serve those who are underserved, without financial barrier?
  • Trustworthiness: Are there clear pathways in and out of the experience, with leaders who are known and accountable?
  • Opportunity: Is the experience meaningful to people at a range of skill and commitment level, with pathways for growth?

Sustainability

  • Financial: Does my project have a financial model and relationship of income to expenses that enables it to create, deliver, sustain, and grow what it does?
  • Structural: Does my project have a sound approach to organization and leadership, with plans for continuity and safeguards against unethical activity?
  • Ecological: Do my project’s activities and outcomes consider and contribute to the health and vitality of the planet?

Reach

  • Availability: Is my project discoverable and welcoming to a significant population of potential participants?
  • Resonance: Do the people I hope to serve recognize the value of my project and demonstrate commitment to its values and practices?
  • Scalability: Does my project have potential for widespread impact, influence, or effect?

Leadership

  • Alignment: Does my leadership team match in skillset and personal qualities what the project needs?
  • Continuity: Does my project have processes in place to identify, support, and train new leaders?
  • Integrity: Does my project’s approach to leadership match the values we espouse?
